Countertop Choices for Your Kitchen Remodel!

Thinking about doing a kitchen remodel at the Lake of the Ozarks?  Picking out your countertops can be a daunting task.  With so many different choices on surface materials, where do you even begin? We have put together a list of countertop materials available with some pros and cons from Houzz.com to help make your decision a little easier.

Granite 

Pros: Granite is one of the top choices in countertop materials.  It is unique in that the colors and patterns are found in nature, rather than being designed by man.  You can choose from many colors and either a polished or matte finish.  It stands up well to splashes, knife nicks, hear and other wear and tear.    

Cons: Granite, like most other stone, has to be sealed regularly to avoid staining.  Also, it is very heavy so you will need cabinet boxes that can hold all that weight.

Marble

Pro: Marble provides sheer elegance and nothing is more glamorous for your countertops at the Lake of the Ozarks.  Since it remains perennially cool, it stands up to heat well. Therefore, it's a traditional choice for pastry and baking stations.  For example, your dough won't get too soft!

Cons: Marble is extremely susceptible to stains, even with sealing.  For that reason, it is often limited to one or two areas rather than used throughout the entire kitchen.  It can also scratch and chip easily.

Quartz 

Pros: Quartz is a good compromise between the beauty of natural stone and the easy care of solid surfacing.  Maintenance of quartz is minimal and its available in a far greater range of colors than natural stone.

Cons: Quartz doesn't have the natural variegation of granite, so it may be evident that it is engineered. It is relatively pricey, although its durability can make it a worthwhile investment.

Laminate

Pros: Laminate is one of the most affordable countertop materials out there.  It's low in maintenance and easy to clean, while it's light weight doesn't need the support of a thick (more expensive) cabinet base.

Cons: Laminate is prone to scratching, burns and even staining sometimes.  Layers can also peel with wear and moisture exposure.  You can't use it with under-mount sinks due to the raw particle board core and it's difficult to repair if it gets damaged.

Soapstone

Pros: Soapstone offers a subtle nuanced beauty, yet feels humbler than natural stone.  It has a softness and depth that fits well with older and cottage-style homes.  Although it starts out light to medium gray, it darkens with time (which could also be a con).

Cons: To keep soapstone in tip-top shape, it needs polishing with oil regularly.  It cracks easily over time and can't handle knife scratches and nicks as well as other materials can.  The natural roughness of its surface can even scuff glassware and china.

Ceramic and Porcelain Tile

Pros: Not only is it good for floors and back splashes, but you can also use tile for countertops!  Tile provides nearly limitless options for color and designs, while being inexpensive.  It holds it's own against heat and sharp blades and resists stains.  It's fairly easy to replace one or two tiles if they chip, rather than having to replace the entire countertop.    

Cons: Tile creates an uneven surface making it difficult to balance a cutting board or roll out some dough.  Unsealed grout is prone to staining and standing moisture can damage it and contribute to bacteria growth.

Concrete

Pros: Concrete isn't just for floors, its versatility is perfect for a countertop material.  It can be cast into any shape and custom tinted to your desired shade.  You can easily add inlays such as glass fragments, rocks or shells.  Although it isn't as heat resistant as other materials, it stands up well to heavy use.  A slightly edgier material, concrete provides industrial chic.

Cons: Because it is porous, concrete has to be sealed frequently to avoid staining.  With time and settling, small crack will develop.  Also, concrete is extremely heavy and will need very strong support underneath.  The custom creation increases the price just like with stainless steel.

Solid Surfaces

Pros: More commonly known as Corian, which is actually a brand name, solid surfacing is nonporous therefore it's virtually maintenance free.  You don't have to reseal it all the time and no special cleaning is required.  Scratches and burns are easy to sand out.  Since it's not natural, you can choose from many vibrant colors such as red or turquoise.  Seamless installation means there are no cracks to trap dirt and debris.

Cons: Solid surfacing can have an artificial look and feel, but can still approach the price of natural stone.  Also, it doesn't stand up to hot pans or sharp knives as well as some of the other materials available.

Stainless Steel

Pros: Stainless steel is nearly indestructable, while resisting heat and bacteria.  It also provides a very distinctive look that feels appropriate in contemporary and industrial style kitchens.

Cons: Fingerprints must be wiped of frequently and stainless steel can dent easily.  It can also be loud as pots, pans and other dishware clang against the surface.  Chemicals can affect its color and cause unwanted etching.  It is also extremely expensive due to the custom fabrication.  

Butcher Block

Pros:  Butcher block has a classic appeal and always looks fresh.  It is especially fitting for traditional, country and cottage-style kitchens.  They provide a warm, natural apperance and varigated wood tones.  Although knives scratch it, many people like the worn look that develops. However, you can easily sand the scratches down.

Cons: Since wood swells and contracts with moisture exposure, it harbors bacteria and needs frequent disinfecting.  You must oil it to fill in scratches and protect the surface.

Luck of the Irish: Shamrocks vs. Clovers

Examine Your Springtime Curb Appeal!

The warmer weather is finally upon us and Spring is almost here!  You can finally enjoy the outdoors and maybe catch up on some home improvements at the Lake of the Ozarks.  The flowers will start blooming and lawns will turn that beautiful green color.  Among the green in your fresh, new yard you may find a four-leaf clover.  But what is so special about the four-leaf clover and why does it symbolize luck?

Shamrocks vs. Clovers

Many people use the terms "shamrock" and "four-leaf clover" interchangeably.  However, they are actually two different things.  The term "shamrock" is derived from the Irish word meaning "little clover."  Considering there are many types of clovers and other similar looking plants, this term is rather vague.  Consequently, in St. Patrick's Day celebrations a number of plants serve as Irish shamrocks.  Identifying one particular plant as the only true Irish shamrock is a dubious task, botanically speaking.  Even in Ireland itself, there is no consensus on which particular plant is the true Irish shamrock.    

The Legend of St. Patrick and Irish Shamrocks

Legend has it that St. Patrick used the shamrock to demonstrate the doctrine of the Trinity in Christian religion. That would mean that the shamrock had three leaflets united by a common stalk. There is no way to determine the exact plant used, but in this case we can rule out the four-leaf clover.  So even though the four-leaf clovers allegedly bring all this good luck, they can't technically be considered a shamrock in the sense that St. Patrick made them famous.

The Luck of the Four-Leaf Clover

The history behind these lucky charms is obviously different from that of the shamrock because we are dealing with the number four instead of three.  It is widely believe that the significance of the four-leaf clover dates back to the pagan period before Christianity was introduced to Ireland. The Druids thought that the four-leaf clover was potent against malevolent spirits.  Their status as a Celtic charm is the origin of the modern belief in their power to bring good luck.  It is estimated that on average there are 10,000 three-leaf clovers for every true four-leaf clover.  So with the chances of you finding one so low, there must be something special there.      

Since Spring is finally among us, everyone will be out and about enjoying the nice weather. People who are looking to buy a new home will be checking out neighborhoods and looking for a place that fits them.  Now is the time to take a look at your home and ask yourself, do I have curb appeal? Caring for Your Hardwood Floors

Hardwood floors make a great addition to any home remodel at Lake of the Ozarks.  Although they aren't soft like carpet, they require less maintenance, last longer and don't hide all the harmful matter that carpet does.  However, that means you can actually see this matter building up on your hardwood floors; so how do you keep them clean?  Check out these tips from Lowes.com to keep your hardwood floors scratch and dirt free!

Cleaning Your Hardwood Floors

Since hardwood floors are one of the largest investments in your home, avoiding permanent damage is important to protecting your investment. Cleaning your floors is the first step in protecting your hardwood floors and eliminate the expense of replacing them in the future. Routinely clean and maintain your floors to avoid dirt and scratches that will dull the finish.  To ensure your beautiful hardwood floors will last a lifetime, be sure to use products that are safe for your floor, family and the environment.  While kids, pets and environment are all key factors in the amount of dirt your hardwood floors attract, you should clean your floors as often as possible.  This frequent cleaning will keep dirt and dust off the floors and avoid scratching.  In addition, it will keep harmful pollutants such as dust and allergens out of the home.  

Polishing Your Hardwood Floors

Depending on the amount of traffic your hardwood floors get, you should polish them every two to four months.  Polish provides a protective layer and evens out your floors by filling in the micro-scratches.  Polishing your floors is a simple do-it-yourself task that starts with sweeping, vacuuming or dust-mopping your floor.  Make sure your floor is dry and then squirt the polish on, spreading it with an applicator.  Follow the coverage specifications and allow it to dry completely.  Don't walk on it for at least an hour and wait 24 hours before allowing heavy traffic on it.      

Steps to Protecting Your Hardwood Floors

1. Daily 

Dust: Dusting each day keeps dust and dirt off the floor therefore preventing scratching.  Daily dust-mopping will also significantly reduce allergens in your home.  Try using a microfiber material because of its static charge that attracts more dust and allergens.  The smaller fibers reach into the floor pores to lift dirt more effectively, extending the life of your floor.

2. Weekly

Clean: Did you know there is actually a wrong way to clean floors?  Too much liquid can damage your hardwood floors, while the wrong formula may not work at all.  When choosing a cleaning product, look for pH-neutral, nontoxic and biodegradable formulas to clean effectively and keep you safe.  Vinegar, for example, can eat away at the finish, even when diluted with water.

3. Quarterly

Polish: Every two months, use water-based polishes to restore luster and shine. These types of polishes won't leave a residue or emit harmful toxins.  Plus they'll prevent over cleaning and stripping of your floor.  Durable, urethane-based polishes have fast dry times, no waxy buildup and a protective wear layer to fill in micro-scratches and even out the appearance of your floor.    

Hardwood Floor Maintenance Tips

• Avoid using water and vinegar, soap-based cleaners, wax or steam cleaners on your hardwood floors.  Vinegar and water will dull your floors finish over time, while soap or wax will leave a residue.  Steam cleaners put hear and excessive water on your floor, which can lead to cupping and long-term damage.
• Use a natural, rubber rug underlayment with a waffle pattern in the entry ways or high traffic areas.  Use felt floor protectors on your furniture and avoid walking across your hardwood floors in high heels.  
• Frequently dry-dust your hardwood floor with a microfiber dusting pad.  The electrostatic action will attract dirt, which is the main cause of scratches, micro-particles and common household allergens.    
• Using the proper tools to clean your floor is important.  A mop paired with a machine-washable microfiber pad is perfect for dusting and cleaning.  Avoid string mops because they put excessive amounts of water on the floor, which can be damaging and actually push dirt around, instead of picking up and removing dirt. 
• Wipe up all spills immediately to avoid permanent stains. 
• Keep pet nails trimmed to avoid scratching on your floors. 
• Maintain a comfortable environment and temperature, especially no extremes in humidity.
